Iditaread
About 95 third and fourth graders are engaged in the Iditaread this week, coinciding with the Iditarod dog sled race in Alaska. Teams of 6-7 students are not pulling a dog sled, but they’re pulling their weight as readers. All teams are aiming for a total of 1,049 reading minutes (the distance from Anchorage to Nome is approximately 1,049 miles).Team progress is mapped on an Alaska map on the main bulletin board. Come in to see how well your child’s Full Moon, Arctic, Reindeer, Seal, or Tundra team is progressing.
Don’t Stop Believing
First graders at Prairie Mountain are enthused about learning and inspired us with songs at their “Keep Trying” music concert. This theme aligns with their reading curriculum and bringing it altogether in song was a fun way to celebrate their accomplishments. The evening featured dancers, actors, and special guitar accompaniment by Mr. Lee. The first graders encouraged us by singing “Follow the Rainbow” and “Life is Good”. Many thanks to music teacher Kim Strohman and first grade teachers Kristin Carter, Robin Hanson and Erin Harris for a wonderfully entertaining evening.
Calling All Future Prairie Mountain Eagles
A special evening is planned on May 13th at 6:30 for parents of incoming kindergarten students. Students who live within Prairie Mountain’s attendance area who will be five years old on or before September 1, 2010 are invited to join us. You will receive a pre-enrollment packet and learn about kindergarten curriculum and specific ways you can help your child be ready for that all important first day of school. Please phone the office (541-607-9849) so we can be sure you are on our mailing list. We request that you bring a copy of your student’s current immunization record as well as birth certificate to this event. All families will receive a special gift for attending; childcare will be provided. We look forward to seeing you and welcoming your student to our school!
College Bound
It is our aim to encourage and equip all students with the desire to go to college. Our College Bound program for middle school students is designed to offer students a glimpse of higher education and inspire them to set educational goals for their future.
Bethel School District alumnae Cody Olson recently visited with our 8th graders to share his experience transitioning from high school to college. Cody set a goal to attend Oregon State to study Engineering, and is currently employed as an engineer in Portland. Cody stressed to our students that higher education can be in their future if they have the courage to dream it.
Bookworms Battle
Prairie Mountain students proudly participated in the district competition for the Oregon Battle of the Books at Powers auditorium making a very strong showing. Students involved in OBOB spend countless hours reading and studying books from the booklist and must quickly recall specific information from each title. Competition is fierce and demanding! We are proud of all our OBOB students and support their desire to excel.
Eighth Grade Transitions
Parents of 8th grade students will want to mark their calendars for Wednesday March 31st for a parent meeting for incoming freshmen at Willamette. This meeting will be at Powers auditorium and will begin at 7:00. Parents will receive important information about classes, curriculum and expectations and have the opportunity to meet key staff members. All 8th grade students will tour the Willamette campus on Tuesday March 30th from 9:45-10:30; busing will be provided. We encourage all parents to acquaint themselves with the wonderful opportunities that await your students in High School.
Ducks Meet Eagles
Students are wild about earning pride cards and one reason is the possible opportunity to have lunch with student athletes from the University of Oregon. The “O Heroes” recently lunched with pride card winners whose lucky cards were picked in a drawing. The pride cards are given as a motivator for students making good choices. The O Heroes mentor, support and encourage positive behavior and academic success; so they fit in well at Prairie Mountain. Thank you to Duck football players Jeff Maehl, Eddie Pleasant, Javes Lewis, Brian Teague, and Lavasier Tuinei for being our O Heroes.
A House Full of Fun
Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 were treated to an entertaining activity during “House Time.” Houses are comprised of mixed grade middle school students led by a staff member. House time may be spent exploring interests, performing community service, or collaborating on fun and adventure. Students look forward to House activities because they allow the opportunity to spend time with other students they might otherwise never cross paths with during a regular school day. The most recent House activity was organized by Aaron Kalms, a talented and dedicated guest teacher. Students were genuinely enthused about the event from start to finish- which included ice cream sundaes!
Can You Feel The Noise?
Our gym was radiating with rhythm when students were treated to a first rate performance from “Dance Africa.” These amazingly gifted musicians and dancers shared African culture and storytelling through dance. This group travels worldwide and this year will visit Guinea, Mali, Malawi, Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Cuba, and South Africa as they share their talent around the globe. We are thankful to our Diversity committee for providing students with the opportunity to experience culture through music and performance in an extremely memorable event.
Prairie Tale Time
Please join us each Wednesday morning at 8:15 in our Elementary Library for "Prairie Tale Time." Moms and Dads bringing older siblings to school are invited to bring along younger brothers or sisters and join us for storytime fun. Our elementary media coordinator, Bethany Bothman, has plenty of entertaining selections prepared that are certain to engage and entertain even the busiest toddlers. Prairie Tale Time is open to the community. We hope you can join us!
