Service Learning students from Willamette High School often come to Malabon to help out where needed. This student (pictured above) is formatting news articles written by the students into an upcoming issue of The Malabon Student Reporter. He also helps to rotate art exhibits in MOMMA: The Museum of Modern Malabon Art, which is located in the cafeteria.
The Malabon Science Fair was held on February 19 in the cafeteria. 67 students in grades 1-5 presented 54 exhibits. This was 22% of the student body participating in an optional extracurricular activity prepared on their own time at home. The exhibits were open to viewing for the entire Malabon student body and parents.
Joanna May, art scholar with the ArtBridge program, recently visited our 3rd grade classrooms for ten sessions. The students had studied Picasso in their reading curriculum, so Ms. May coordinated her art projects towards Picasso's style. The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon sponsors this program and the Malabon PTO paid for the art materials. This is the fourth year that the 3rd grade has undertaken this art activity.
The Bethel Education Foundation helped Malabon School out in a big way this month! Our music teacher Mr. Green was awarded funds to purchase new drum sticks for students. All Malabon students learn how to read music. They use drum pads and now some quality drum sticks to practice the basics of the drum beat.
Third Grade Teacher Charissa Nelson was awarded funds to assist in the area of Reading. All primary students are grouped according to their specific reading level for 45 minutes each day. Lots of kids mean lots of groups. We know that the smaller the groups the more individual instruction each child receives. With the BEF donation we are able to hire another adult to work with a group, keeping our student to teacher ratio as small as possible. Thanks BEF!!!
Malabon Cool Cats were caught being people of character. It takes a team but these great students know the importance of lending a helping hand and being conscientious citizens!
Malabon students and staff would like to thank the dad of Charissa Charpie, one of our 1st grade teachers. He donated a smart board to our library. This is a piece of technology that offers ease of instruction and presentations. From sharing data at staff meetings to showing internet based educational material to students, our ability to reach, teach and inspire just got smarter.
In December Oregon Wood Magic returned to Malabon. The OSU Department of Wood Science and Engineering has visited Malabon’s third grade for three years now. Students learn about trees as a renewable resource, the parts and life cycle of trees, and all the products we get from trees. We do experiments involving the strength of wood and learn about the xylem which demonstrates how trees are porous and are able to drink water.
The entire Malabon student body sang their “Choo Choo Ch’ Boogie Concert” in Powers Auditorium at Willamette High School on Dec. 14. Nearly 300 students gathered under the spotlights on an elegant stage and performed a variety of exciting songs for a packed house.
Have you read a good Toothy Tale lately? Stop by the bulletin board in Malabon’s cafeteria to read some great fourth grade writing! Mrs. Kampfer’s class is working hard at perfecting their narrative writing…and there is definitely some talent there!
During our last in-service day, Malabon teachers worked together to roll out our new writing curriculum at Malabon. This new district wide writing map will allow the vocabulary and techniques being taught to be consistent throughout each grade level, ensuring even greater student success in writing.
Malabon’s Harvest Festival was a big hit last Friday. Our PTO sponsored this family fun night filled with games, snacks and costume contests. The turn-out was wonderful and many kids were able to spend the start of their weekend in a safe and fun environment. Thank you Malabon PTO!
As our Malabon staff enjoys a few more weeks of summer, many are getting excited about getting back into the building. In fact, a group of staff and parents have been showing their creative side this week . Our Media Coordinator, Janice Matti, spearheaded a paint project to beautify our library. She enlist our very own expert designer (aka kindergarten assistant) Jana Nelson to head the show. What an amazing final project! Our kids will definitely want to spend parts of their day in this fun new environment. Thanks to all that stopped in to help paint! And much gratitude to Forest Paint for their paint donation!
Bethesda Lutheran Church had their Sabath for Service weekend on May 2nd and 3rd. Many wonderful volunteers spent their weekend in the rain and wind, working outside at Malabon. Trenches were dug and irrigation pipes were put in. Window frames were painted all around the school. It is with much gratitude that we at Malabon thank you for your time and energy. Bethesda has included Team Depot in their project. Sometime this summer Malabon's courtyard will come alive with patios, picnic tables and landscaping. We are looking forward to an outdoor area where students can have lunch, study the plant life and enjoy their beautiful school.
Malabon's courtyard has arrived! Friends from Bethesda Lutheran and Home Depot's Team Depot spent a day turning our area outside of our south building into a wonderful place for kids. We will add plants, shrubs and trees as we can. Students have already spent time eating lunch and working on projects in our new space.
The Malabon Micro-Observatory is a permanent scientific site located in the Music Room. One station holds seven microscopes with power ranges of 20x, 40x, 100x and 400x for detailed study of tiny animal organisms and plant material. The second station features six mounted magnifying glasses for the viewing of larger objects. Students visit the observatory at the beginning and end of each music class to study the displays. They are also encouraged to bring their own interesting discoveries to school for study under the scopes. (Specimens in the accompanying picture include: a dog’s tooth, blackberry thorn, dandelion seed, moss, lichens, flower stamens, mushroom, and cotton thread.)
Malabon students earned a free recess. During the week of March 9th and March 16th, students were given class pillar awards for lining up safely, quietly and respectfully after the recess bell rang. This allowed quick transitions back into the classroom. For all that time saved, teachers gave their students a fifteen minute recess prior to heading out the door for Spring Break.
Students were given a great surprise when the Mr. Wolverine contestants, coordinators and King, Andrew Pann showed up on the playground. Basketball, tag, tetherball and basketball were among the favorite games played. These young men and women may have big responsibilities throughout the week but they still know how to be kids! A fun afternoon was had by all. Thanks Mr. Wolverine!
The 2009 Malabon Science Fair took place on March 6th in the cafeteria. There were 62 students participating in 46 scientific presentations. Projects included liquid dynamics, geological events, animal studies, solar system mechanics, chemical reactions, and electrical properties.
Thanks to those families who assisted their children the as they created their projects at home.
