CLEAR LAKE SUPPORTS HAITI
In an outstanding show of support for the Haiti earthquake relief effort, Clear Lake held a one-day coin drive last Friday the 22nd. Our total of $565.46 was an impressive one-day amount. And to maximize the help, we donated the funds at the Eugene Home Show last Saturday at the fairgrounds where the host company matched our funds to make a total of $1,130.92.
The money went to Medical Teams International, a west coast based organization that has been in existence since 1979. Click HERE to read more about the organization.
Our sincere thanks to all of the Clear Lake families and students for their tremendous generosity in help of the people in Haiti.
CLEAR LAKE PAYS TRIBUTE TO MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
With a Theme of "We Are All The Same On The Inside," students from several grades and our Leadership group performed skits, sang songs, read poems and essays during our school assembly to pay tribute to MLK Jr.
Our Music teacher, Ms. Kelley, wrote two songs just for the event. Students from different grades contributed with something that fit the theme for the assembly. Many parents were on hand at the event.
Thanks to Mrs. Lathrop, our counselor, the staff and students who all put in time to prepare decorations and prepare presentations for the all-school assembly.
OBOB TEAMS READIN' AND BATTLIN'
This year's OBOB season is underway throughout the district. Clear Lake had enough students interested that we formed 8 teams! The students had their first practice battle recently, the teams were paired up to take on another Clear Lake team.
The participants are reading their books in order to be the top team at Clear Lake and represent the school at the district battle on March 1st at Powers auditorium. Click Here to see more pictures and descriptions of a recent practice battle.

ROCKY THE SHERIFF DOG INSPIRES STUDENTS
Lane County Sheriff Deputies recently visited 4th grade and brought along one of their hardest working members- Rocky the dog. Students learned what Rocky does in his job with the Sheriff's Department and how he came to be a police dog. Rocky had previously served with the military in Iraq, sniffing out explosives.
The class also heard about the importance of writing. As part of being a Sheriff, writing accurate reports is a regular routine. The students are learning that writing is a key part of many careers as guest visitors are going into our 4th grade classes and showing how they use writing in their jobs.
TAKE A HALLWAY ART TOUR FROM HOME
Some of the wonderful art and writing samples on display in the hallways at Clear Lake are available to you at home. Click the ART TOUR to see a PDF of pictures and descriptions. Even better, come visit your child's classroom and tour the hallways to see all of the quality work Clear Lake students are doing.
FIREMEN VISIT KINDERGARTEN
Firefighters from Engine Company 7 in Eugene visited Mrs. Harts's kindergarten class on Friday. In addition to teaching about "Stop, Drop, and Roll," firefighter Mike put on his coat, air mask, and helmet. That gave students an opportunity to see and hear what they should do at home in the event of a fire, and what a fireman might look like if they entered a smoke-filled house. In addition to academics, kindergarten students learn about a variety of safety and health topics.
EUGENE AIRPORT ROTARY SUPPORTS 3RD GRADERS
John Alvord of the Eugene Airport Rotary visited Clear Lake, bearing gifts of new dictionaries for all 3rd grade students. The local Rotary International chapter has been doing this for several Bethel schools for the last several years.
The 3rd grade students were excited and appreciative of their new dictionaries, each student inscribed their name and date in their new book. Many thanks to the support of the Rotary in helping our students gain an academic edge with such a useful resource book.
THE CLEAR LAKE GARDEN KEEPS GROWING
Thanks to our PTO's funding for staff from the School Garden Project to come to the school, our courtyard garden has grown by four new growing beds.
Students spent time this afternoon planting fava beans, adding soil to the new beds and starting a leaf composting stack. Spring will be here soon enough and the garden will really be showing the work of our 2nd graders.
